Indonesia: The World’s Leading Charcoal Exporter
As of 2023, Indonesia stands as the world’s largest exporter of charcoal. According to data from the The Observatory of Economic Complexity, the country exported wood charcoal valued at approximately USD 417 million, significantly surpassing other major exporters such as China (USD 112 million), Poland (USD 90.3 million), Myanmar (USD 87.2 million), and Namibia (USD 80.5 million).
Indonesia’s strong position in the global charcoal market is supported by its abundant natural resources, including coconut shells and various hardwood species, as well as the consistently high quality of its products. Indonesian charcoal is widely recognized for its long burning time, low smoke emission, and environmentally friendly characteristics. These advantages make it highly востребован in international markets, particularly for shisha (hookah) and barbecue applications.
Beyond its export value, the charcoal industry plays a vital role in supporting the national economy. It contributes to job creation, especially in rural areas, and helps drive regional economic growth. At the same time, the industry faces several ongoing challenges, including sustainable resource management, evolving export regulations, and increasing global competition.
To address these challenges, both the government and industry stakeholders continue to promote responsible and sustainable production practices. With strong resources, growing global demand, and a commitment to sustainability, Indonesia is well-positioned to maintain its leadership in the global charcoal market for years to come.
